The impact of climate change in Galicia is no longer a future threat, but an urgent reality. Just look at the state of the rivers, reservoirs, and aquifers to see how early heat waves, longer-than-usual droughts, and the irregularity of precipitation are putting a resource we have always taken for granted at risk. In the face of this scenario, we are launching our responsible water consumption campaign once again, under the slogan “Water is not infinite. Use it wisely.”
The initiative is being carried out in the municipalities of …, where we manage the municipal water service. In each of them, in close collaboration with the local governments, we will combine informational materials and digital communication channels so that the message about water conservation reaches residents as directly as possible.
The campaign focuses on the fact that no individual action is too small when it comes to conserving and protecting the entire water cycle. That’s why, beyond theory, it aims to provide very simple and easy-to-apply guidelines for everyday life. At home, turn off the faucet while you lather your dishes or teeth, choose a shower over a bath and keep it to the necessary length, and run the washing machine and dishwasher only with a full load. It’s also important to check your home’s plumbing or install flow restrictors to prevent the gallons lost to leaks.
Filling the pool, washing the car, or watering the lawn are common habits at this time of year, but it’s important to do them responsibly: avoid the hottest hours, make the most of every gallon, and cut back on non-essential uses. And if we go on vacation and the house is empty, we should turn off the main water valve to prevent leaks and surprises while there’s no one around to catch them. Because conserving water also depends on those small decisions that, when added up, help protect an increasingly valuable and vulnerable resource.
