Espina & Delfín has completed its project to digitize the urban water cycle, which was awarded during the first call for proposals under the PERTE for Water Digitization launched by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) and funded by the European Union—NextGenerationEU—as part of the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan.
With a grant of 7 million euros and a total investment exceeding 10 million, the initiative has been fully implemented, reaffirming the company’s position as a leader in innovation and efficiency in water management on a national scale.
Renovation of the water system in nine Galician municipalities
The projects have benefited Cartelle, Cerceda, Coirós, Leiro, Negreira, Palas de Rei, Sarria, Vilagarcía de Arousa, and Vilanova de Arousa—towns that together have a population of nearly 80,000. The scope of the work involves a comprehensive overhaul of Galicia’s water system, incorporating advanced technology at every stage of the water cycle.
Among the measures implemented are the installation of smart meters in all municipalities participating in the program, the commissioning of flow meters and water quality analyzers at both water intake points and water treatment plants, and the full deployment of digital platforms for data management and visualization. Artificial intelligence systems and cybersecurity tools are also fully operational, strengthening information security and streamlining decision-making in day-to-day management.
The energy component of the project has also been fully implemented, with all of the planned capacity now installed and operational, which helps reduce both the environmental footprint and operating costs. Meanwhile, geographic information systems—with georeferencing and digital network modeling capabilities—have been implemented in all municipalities, enabling comprehensive monitoring of infrastructure and a predictive maintenance approach.
Galician Leadership in Water Digitalization
Espina & Delfín is the only company in Galicia to have received individual funding in the first round of the PERTE, a national program that allocated 200 million euros to 30 projects across the country.
The completion of this project reaffirms the company’s leadership in comprehensive water cycle management, a field in which it combines engineering expertise, in-house technological development, and continuous innovation to address water-related challenges both in Galicia and across the national and international markets.
