The Espina & Delfín laboratory continues to expand its presence in Galicia after being awarded the contract for analytical testing of the water managed by Servizos Urbanos Municipais de Arteixo (SUMARTE), the public company that provides drinking water and sanitation services in the Municipality of Arteixo.
The contract includes sampling and analyzing the quality of water intended for human consumption, as well as monitoring public water sources, the water intakes at the Rexedoiro Reservoir, and the quality of river water in the Sisalde and Bolaños rivers.
The contract award strengthens Espina & Delfín’s market position at a time of growing demand for specialized analytical services related to the full water cycle. In addition, the company submitted the technically highest-rated bid in the procurement process, with a proposal that stood out for its methodology, responsiveness, traceability, and technical support for the service.
The service will be provided by the Espina & Delfín laboratory in Santiago de Compostela, which is accredited by ENAC in accordance with the UNE-EN ISO/IEC 17025 standard and specializes in the analysis of water for public supply, wastewater, the natural environment, and public and industrial facilities.
The Espina & Delfín laboratory combines its involvement in the municipal water contracts that the group manages in nearly 50 municipalities with an increasingly significant portfolio of external clients. Among them are organizations such as AENA, the Provincial Council of Segovia, and Tragsa, as well as specialized companies like Hidrogestión, which relies on the laboratory for water analysis at Barcelona’s El Prat Airport. In addition, the client list includes municipalities in Galicia, Asturias, and Castile and León, as well as leading industrial wastewater treatment plants operated by the company itself, including those of Congalsa, Clun, Galfor, and Inleit.
In 2026, several significant new members joined the initiative, including the Arteixo City Council itself, the Pravia City Council (Asturias), the Palma del Río City Council (Córdoba), and the La Palma Island Council in the Canary Islands—a development that confirms the laboratory’s growing influence both in Galicia and beyond the region.
The laboratory’s expansion also coincides with a pivotal moment for the sector. Royal Decree 3/2023 has significantly tightened the requirements for the control of water intended for human consumption by incorporating new parameters and raising the technical standards required for its analysis. In addition, as of January 1, 2028, laboratories must have all applicable methods accredited in accordance with UNE-EN ISO/IEC 17025. This change will significantly raise market standards and positions the Espina & Delfín laboratory among the best-prepared in northwestern Spain to tackle this new phase.
